The Longest 3 hours

Six Apart has released the latest version of Movable Type, 3.2, a long overdue overhaul of its blogging software. With lots of anti-spam goodness. And because this goodness is built in, it should make leaving comments easier!

The upgrade instructions seem simple enough.

Replace files in your installation with the files in the upgrade package. Make sure permissions are correct. Then log in as you usually do and blammo, it upgrades itself. Sounds easy, right? Not by a long shot!

For one thing, when I logged back in, I got a unformatted, ungraphical plain jane login page. That means that the program is not finding the static directory where the images are kept.

I'm hosted by 1and1 which means the entire directory is a cgi-bin. Normally, I don't have to create a separate static directory.

So i click on the "upgrade database" button and nothing happens. I spend the next two hours backtracking and double checking config files and file permissions.

Finally, as a last resort, I took a peek at the source of the "upgrade database" page. It is looking for the "mt-static" directory and files inside it!

I uploaded the "mt-static" folder to my root level verbatim and logged in again. Voila! It looks like it should AND when I clicked on "upgrade database", lo and behold, moving graphics and most importantly, the fracking script RAN!

I took all of 4 minutes. Then I rebuilt the site and now you're reading it.

I'm tired. I'm going to bed. HUGGIES!
